Waylon's Senior Sunday: Miracle Edition

Miracle #1 – Pregnancy
When we were told it would be extremely difficult for us to have children — due to my clinical diagnosis of endometriosis and the stress that came with adopting our son, Willie — we turned to God for wisdom and healing. I even consulted with a specialist who had helped my sister, and in August of 2006, we discovered I was pregnant without any medical assistance. We knew a miracle had occurred.

Sadly, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage, and with my sister’s history of miscarriages, fear tried to creep in. But in April of the next year, we were pregnant again. From the very beginning, something felt different — a deep peace and assurance that this baby was part of God’s plan.

Miracle #2 – Our Survival
At 16 weeks, we found out we were having another boy! However, the radiologist seemed concerned. Soon after, I was referred to a specialist, Dr. Stanley, who diagnosed me with velamentous cord insertion — a rare condition occurring in only 1% of pregnancies. It meant Waylon’s umbilical cord wasn’t attached normally, and both our lives were at risk.

I went to the hospital 2-3 times a week and the doctor weekly (sometimes several times a week) for ultrasounds and non-stress tests. Each time, the doctors asked the same questions: Any bleeding? Any pressure? Any changes in his position? Each time my answer was no — and peace remained within me. Waylon was growing and was extremely active.  With every test, ultrasound and appointment there seemed to be growing confusion from the doctor because they could never capture a picture of where and how his umbilical cord was inserted.

Then, in mid-December, Dr. Stanley debated how long we could safely wait. Finally, he decided that December 28th was the latest I could go — but the hospital was full, so we scheduled for December 26th. He also said, “If you spot, bleed or you feel him drop before that call 911 immediately and get to the hospital via ambulance so we don’t lose you both.”  I was shocked!  That was NEXT WEEK!!!  Then it struck me how serious this must be but the peace and assurance still remained with me!

When delivery day came, two of my dear friends, both charge nurses, scrubbed in — one for me, one for Waylon. When the doctor finally saw how Waylon was attached, everyone gasped. He was connected by only three tiny veins! Yet there he was — healthy, loud, and beautiful.

Miracle #3 – Made New
After Waylon’s delivery, my doctor went in to remove my endometriosis. But it was gone. She double-checked records and even called my primary physician. Every record confirmed I had it — but it had completely disappeared. God had healed me!

Because of the affects of the spinal I had not been able to go to the nursery and see Waylon. 16 hours later, in the middle of the night the nurse called to say Waylon wouldn’t settle down for her. When I reached his bed and said his name, he wrapped his little hand around my finger, and he immediately calmed and began breathing easily.

Then she unhooked him from all she could and in that sacred moment, I held my 5 lb 8 oz miracle — fully aware that God had healed us both and written a story of His power and grace over our lives.

If you are believing for healing, don’t give up.
Healing is for today. He still does miracles — I’ve lived many them.
